Indonesian Rupiah demystified. Where to exchange, which ATMs to trust, when to use cards, how much to tip, and the art of bargaining — all from locals who deal with it daily.
Plan My TripBali uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). 1 USD is roughly 15,500-16,000 IDR. Exchange at reputable changers in Seminyak or Ubud (not the airport), use bank ATMs, carry cash for local warungs, and cards work at most hotels and restaurants.
The official currency of Indonesia is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), and it can be disorienting at first. A single US dollar is worth approximately 15,500–16,000 IDR (2026 rates), which means you will routinely handle notes worth 50,000 and 100,000 IDR. The largest denomination is the IDR 100,000 note (red), worth roughly $6.25 USD. Smaller denominations include IDR 50,000 (blue), IDR 20,000 (green), IDR 10,000 (purple), IDR 5,000 (brown), and IDR 2,000 (grey). Coins exist but are rarely used in tourist transactions.
The key to handling Rupiah is to mentally drop the last three zeros and divide by 15–16 to get the approximate USD value. So IDR 150,000 is roughly $10, IDR 500,000 is roughly $32, and IDR 1,000,000 is roughly $63. After a day or two, this mental math becomes second nature. Most prices in tourist areas are quoted in IDR, though some upscale restaurants and villas also show USD prices.
Where you exchange money matters enormously. The airport exchange counters offer some of the worst rates in Bali — typically 5–10% below market rate. Authorised money changers in Seminyak (particularly along Jalan Raya Seminyak and Jalan Laksmana) and Ubud offer much better rates. Look for the name "BMC" (Bali Maspintjinra Central), "Central Kuta", or "Dirgahayu" — these are reputable chains with digital rate boards and no hidden fees. Avoid small, unofficial money changers that advertise impossibly good rates — these often use sleight-of-hand tricks to short-change tourists.
Credit and debit cards are widely accepted at hotels, mid-range to upscale restaurants, shopping malls, and larger shops. Visa and Mastercard are the most accepted networks. American Express has limited acceptance. Always carry cash for warungs (local eateries), market shopping, temple entry fees, small tips, and transport. A good daily cash estimate is IDR 300,000–500,000 ($20–32) for incidentals, with larger expenses going on card.
