Gili Islands Guide — Trawangan, Air & Meno Compared

Gili Trawangan, affectionately known as Gili T, is the largest and most developed of the three islands at roughly 3 kilometres long and 2 kilometres wide. The east coast strip is lined with bars, restaurants, dive shops, and hotels ranging from backpacker hostels to luxury villas. Nightlife centres on the main strip where bars host reggae nights, fire shows, and full-moon parties. The snorkeling right off the beach on the east side is arguably the best of all three islands, with healthy coral starting just 20 metres from shore and regular turtle sightings. Gili Meno is the smallest, quietest, and least developed of the three Gilis, and that is precisely its appeal. With a permanent population of just a few hundred people, limited electricity in some areas, and no ATMs, Meno feels like a genuine deserted island. The famous underwater NEST sculpture installation draws snorkelers to the west side, where you can float above a circle of life-sized human figures coated in coral. A saltwater lake in the island's interior attracts birdlife. There are a handful of small hotels and restaurants, but do not expect variety — bring cash and a book. Gili Meno is perfect for honeymooners seeking total privacy, digital detox enthusiasts, and anyone who dreams of having a tropical beach entirely to themselves.
